More than 500 cyclists across New York, and Canada, are riding through Rochester on their way to Albany.

It's part of the 15th annual Cycling the Erie Canal tour bike.

Bikers started peddling along the 400-mile long canalway on Sunday morning. The bunch will finish the bike at the state's capitol this Sunday.

Murray Gordon, of Ontario, Canada, says he enjoys the tour because you learn a lot about the small towns along the Erie Canal and their history.

“I didn't know about Medina sandstone,” Gordon says. “I mean, I suppose, I knew about Medina sandstone on buildings and through things in New York, and lots of other places, and never knew what it was. Apparently, it's been relatively famous; I didn't know that (laughing)."

Gordon says he's been training for the ride since the middle of March. Official say they're covering between 40 to 60 miles a day.

"Each day's ride is a nice length. We’ve already met some new people,” Gordon adds. “I never get tired riding beside water. You get away from things, tune stuff out … it's just you and your bike, and some pretty water."

Sherry Miller, of Virginia, says sometimes there are stretches of the 400-mile trail that become long...

"We hooked up with some people that we drifted behind,” Millers says. “So we talk about stupid stuff or sing stupid songs. So it helps cover those long miles, doing it with somebody [else]. It helps the time go by, too."

Cyclists are camping out overnight at the Jefferson Road Elementary School - before heading to their next rest stop in Seneca Falls.

The bike tour is organized by Parks and Trails New York.
