Battle Against Emerald Ash Borer Continues

There are measures homeowners can take to save their trees from the emerald ash borer that is killing trees throughout the region.

Laurie Broccolo, owner of Broccolo Tree and Lawn Care Center, says trees can be treated and protected from the insect through an injection in into the trunk.

"If we can protect these trees over the next few years, the emerald ash borer will continue to move out of our neighborhood, and what we have protected will continue to be fine for many years to come."

Broccolo notes the emerald ash borer can't kill a tree that's been treated, and the insect will skip over treated trees and attack a new forested area instead

The typical treatments for a good sized tree is $200 to $300 dollars.

But she says the injections have been proven to work.

She says homeowners need to weigh the cost of the treatment to the value of their investment -- their trees.

She feels it's money well spent.

Broccolo says saving important ash trees is a priority for her company, and there there simply isn't any other tree that can replace it, especially in our wetlands.
