Banners at Rochester Airport Will Promote Local Schools

Monroe County School Boards Association

A group of Monroe County school superintendents and local business leaders is launching a promotional campaign touting the success of local schools.

Jody Siegle, executive director of the Monroe County School Boards Association, and member of the Monroe County Superintendent Public Education Advocacy Committee, says the idea came about a couple of years ago. “It grew out of the frustration of hearing people, particularly political leaders in the state making so casually make casual statements about public schools, as if all of the public schools were terrible. The kinds of sweeping generalizations we would hear just did not match the reality of what goes on in public schools.”

Banners that will be seen at the Rochester airport will feature various statistics, including the fact that nearly 50% of students graduating from schools in Monroe County earn the regents diploma with distinction.  Another touts the fact that Monroe County students “substantially outperform national averages on Advanced Placement exams, and over 72% of test takers achieve scores that can earn college credit.”

Siegle says they're hoping to capture the attention of business travelers who may be considering relocating to the Rochester area.  The cost of the banners is being underwritten by business partners of the MCSPEAC-Campus Construction, M & T Bank, and LaBella Associates.
