Demand for gas last week was at an all-time high according to AAA.

Spokesperson Elizabeth Carey says people are spending $69 more a month on gas this year compared to prices in the summer of 2017.

"So there’s a boost in demand and a drop in inventory. And that’s what’s really pushing up gas prices right now. Right now, the national average is $2.87. That’s the most expensive since August 2014."

The average in Rochester is $2.97, up three cents since last week. In both Buffalo and Watertown its hit the $3.00 mark

Despite the higher rates, Carey says it hasn’t stopped people from driving to their summer vacation destinations

"This year global demand outpaced that global supply. So we're at the peak of summer travel right now. I saw five out of state license plates this morning on my morning commute. So we're seeing a lot of travel, so there’s an extremely high demand for that gasoline right now."

But Carey says relief is on the way, prices usually drop after Labor Day when demand begins to decrease.
