Assini: Trump Must Work to Unite a Divided Country

Mark Assini says President-elect Donald Trump has his some big challenges ahead.

Assini, a Republican who lost his second consecutive race to incumbent Democratic Congresswoman Louise Slaughter on Tuesday, predicts that Trump's election will result in some changes for the GOP.

"I think people should watch closely. I think the next couple of months are going to be very interesting. I do think there is going to be....I don't want to call it an evolution; I think it's going to be more of a revolution. I think there's going to be a sit-down with the powers that be and some of the groups like the Tea Party and others, and they're going to have to come together, because right now, they're just splitting the party in two."

Assini, who supported Trump throughout the campaign, said the President-elect must work to unify a divided country.

"We are a divided nation, and it's not just because of this election, although this election really brought a lot of that division out”, he said, “It's been the last twelve years that really have seen the country dividing along ideological grounds, and I think there's also a large racial divide that needs to be healed; there's a lot going on. He's got a big challenge."

Assini, the Gates town supervisor, is not ruling out another Congressional campaign. He came to within fewer than 900 votes of Slaughter in 2014. Tuesday’s victory for the veteran incumbent was by a wider margin of 56 to 44 percent.  Assini said he wants to talk to his family before deciding what comes next.
