Arrest Made In Genesee Street Murders

Rochester Police have made an arrest in connection with the mass shooting on Genesee Street last week that took three lives and injured four others. But authorities say they cannot yet release a lot of details about the suspect.

Chief Michael Ciminelli says someone is in custody for the drive-by shooting on Wednesday night of last week outside the Boys and Girls Club. But he can't identify the suspect yet until the charges are formally filed.

He does say police have some valuable evidence.

"We have also recovered the car that was used in the drive-by, and at least one firearm that was used in the drive by shooting."

Ciminelli says the person to be arrested in connection with the crime already is in jail on unrelated charges.

Mayor Lovely Warren says she's proud of the RPD for making this arrest.

"But as a mother, I'm neither proud nor pleased that violence continues to plague our streets and victimize our children."

Warren says something must be done to change this culture of violence.

"To our youth and citizens that think that jail is a badge of honor let me tell you this, if you love your mother, if you love your father, or your children and family, please choose a different route."

Warren says she doesn't want to witness any more mothers or fathers having to bury their children.

Ciminelli says this is still a very active investigation, and potentially there could be other arrests.

"This is a very difficult investigation, it's very complex, there's a lot of moving parts, we have many RPD officers, other federal, state and local officers, prosecutors that are working on this. Without getting specific, this investigation is leading in a lot of different directions and we're continuing and expanding it."

Authorities have also increased the reward money for information leading to a successful prosecution to $25,000.
