Area members of the House of Representatives voted along party lines on the tax reform bill that was first approved Tuesday, but which will need a re-vote on Wednesday due to a procedural issue.
Democrat Louise Slaughter, 25th District Representative of Fairport said the bill will provide “a massive tax cut for big corporations and the wealthy while raising taxes for 86 million middle class families…”
Republican Chris Collins, 27th District Rep. from the Buffalo area says that an average family in his district will pay $1,875 less in taxes each year with this bill, an dhe says it will provide incentives for small businesses to hire more workers.
Republican Tom Reed, 23rd District Rep. from Corning, said the bill will provide “much needed tax relief for working families,” and says it’s a once in a generation opportunity to reshape the tax code.
Republican John Katko, 24th District Rep. from Syracuse, says the final bill safeguards the Historic Preservation Tax Credit and the income exclusion for graduate tuition waivers. He also says the bill will deliver tax relief and allow local businesses to invest in the workforce.
New York’s two Democratic U.S. Senators, Chuck Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand both voted against the bill, with Schumer saying it would provide a windfall for the wealthy and a “paltry temporary leap for some in the middle class…”
