ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — Consumer rights advocates are back at the Capitol to support a bill that would require GMO labeling on New York food.
Republican Sen. Kenneth LaValle and Assembly Democrat Linda Rosenthal have proposed a bill that would require labeling of all food, seeds and agricultural products made from genetically modified organisms.
The Citizens Campaign for the Environment rallied Wednesday with legislators and consumer rights advocates in support of the bill.
CCE Executive Director Adrienne Esposito says that more than 90 percent of the public also supports GMO labeling, and more than 60 countries require it.
Genetically modified crops are controversial because they typically require more pesticides, some of which have been deemed carcinogenic. Others say the crops can help feed impoverished countries and required labeling could slow down progress.
