Alpina Foods To Lay Off Workers

Alpina Foods officials have confirmed that the company will be reducing its workforce at its Batavia plant this month.

The company is cutting 32 employees, which officials say is due to the early termination of one of their principal contracts.

But the yogurt maker says it remains committed to Batavia and Western New York and views the reduction as a temporary but necessary approach to address the immediate business challenges.

An official with the Genesee County Economic Development says  that agency will work with Alpina to help them get the jobs back to where it was.

Alpina received state and local incentives when it originally opened in the Genesee Valley Agri-Business Park, and at that time said 50 jobs would be created. Reportedly the plant had about 58 workers as of January.
