Addressing Campus Sexual Assaults

Senator Kirsten Gillibrand says there's been an endless wave of sexual assaults on the nation's college campuses.

So she's co-sponsoring legislation designed to create incentives for schools to take proactive steps to protect students.

Gillibrand says she was moved by a recent article about a Hobart and William Smith college student named "Anna" who told the New York Times she was sexually assaulted on campus.

The college said it handled the case properly with compassion, respect and seriousness.

Gillibrand says her legislation, the bipartisan Campus Accountability and Safety Act, addresses the epidemic problem of campus sexual assaults.

She says it lifts the burden off the survivor's shoulders, and places it firmly on our colleges and universities.

The legislation calls for new campus resources and support services for student survivors, new transparency requirements, and increases campus accountability.

Gillibrand says under the bill, schools that underreport incidents of sexual assaults face stiff fines, victims will get confidential counseling they deserve, and survivors will work with advisors who have proper training.
