AARP has released a new surveyshowing that about two thirds of working Baby Boomers in Monroe County say they may consider moving out of state when they retire.
AARP associate state director Bill Armbruster said this has potentially significant economic consequences for the community.
"The fifty-plus population in Monroe County alone brings in $7.3 billion to the local economy. If those folks left, they would be taking with them about $5 billion every year out of our economy to someplace else."
AARP hosted a roundtable discussion in Rochester this morning with county, state and nonprofit leaders to come up with solutions to keep more retirees in the area.
Armbruster said aside from government policy changes to drive down the cost of property taxes, community support might help stem the "Boomer Flight."
He says access to more affordable housing and lower utility costs could also entice more retirees to stay in the area.
