AAA Projects Rise in Holiday Travel

Cheaper gas prices and improvements in the economy are spurring an increase in travel this  Thanksgiving holiday.

That's according to travel projections from AAA.

Spokesperson Elizabeth Carey says the auto club projects 48.7 million Americans will travel,  most of them by car.

"A lot of people are back at work, unemployment is low.  Gas prices have been reasonable.  We've seen a lot of people traveling throughout the year, and this Thanksgiving shouldn't be any  different. We do expect a lot of travelers," she said.

Carey says this could be the most Thanksgiving holiday travelers since 2007.

The vast majority -- 89 percent -- will be driving.

"43.5 million Americans expect to take road trips this year.  So we do expect a lot of  congestion on the roads.  You might want to try to consider leaving early or traveling late. Wednesday will be a busy day and Sunday will be a busy day on the return, as well," she said.

Gas prices average $2.33 in Rochester, down 7 cents from a year ago.

Carey is reminding drivers to put their cell phones down, and obey the "Move Over Law," by  slowing down and moving over if you see an emergency vehicle on the shoulder.
