AAA: Busiest Memorial Day Travel in 10 Years

AAA estimates that some 37.2-million Americans will travel 50 miles or more this Memorial Day holiday weekend.

That's the highest travel volume for the holiday in 10 years, according to spokesperson Diana Dibble.

She says there are several reasons for the uptick in travel.

"Basically we're looking at an improved economy, improved consumer confidence, and lower gas prices and basically that will will result in consumer spending and generally travel travel benefits from that."

AAA estimates US household have spent about 400 dollars less on gasoline this year compared to the same period last year.

Gas prices have risen this spring, but Dibble says the rate of the increase has slowed, with the price per gallon up only about a penny the last week.

The price at the pump around Rochester is down a dollar 5 from a year ago, to around 2.75 a gallon.

Most travelers in the U-S will be paying the cheapest Memorial Day gas prices in 5 years.
