$400,000 For Photonics Research At The University Of Rochester

University of Rochester

The University of Rochester has been awarded nearly $412,000 for photonics research. That according to Congresswoman Louise Slaughter, who says the money will help scientists develop new materials to support the next generation of photonics devices.

She says the unique properties of the quantum materials being studied will enable researched to look into new sources of quantum light, which is the underpinnings of the science of photonics. Photonics  involves the use of light and optics, such as lasers, in a number of applications including internet networks.

Slaughter says the federal grant is particularly important since it will present opportunities to introduce and engage high school and university students with a special emphasis on increasing the number of low-income and historically underrepresented individuals in that field.
