Carlet reports on news topics relevant to the community and helps to create and develop story ideas to produce comprehensive and compelling news stories. Prior to joining WXXI, she worked at RNews as a Desk Assistant. Carlet earned her Associate’s degree in Communications & Media Arts from Monroe Community College in 2004, and received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Communications/Journalism at St. John Fisher College in 2006. Her work has been honored by the New York State chapter of the Associated Press.

Wrestling Omitted from 2020 Olympic Games

The wrestling locally and across the globe is fighting to keep the sport as a core game in the 2020 Summer Olympics.


On Tuesday, the International Olympic Committee recommended not including wrestling in the 2020 Olympic Games.  Karate, wakeboarding, roller sports, baseball/softball, the Martial Art wushu, squash and sport climbing are among the other sports being considered to replace wrestling.

Proposed Legislation Pushes to Ban Youth Football

The president of one local football league calls the ban on young kids playing football a "knee jerking" reaction. 

A downstate legislator recently introduced a bill that would prohibit children under the age of 11 from participating in tackle football because of the possibility of head injuries.

"Shop Talk" with Rochester's Mayor and Police Chief

Rochester Mayor Tom Richards and Police Chief James Sheppard at Whitmore’s International Barbershop for Tuesday's "Shop Talk" event.

About 50 community members gathered at at Whitmore’s International Barbershop on Monroe Avenue to talk candidly with Rochester’s Mayor and Police Chief on Tuesday.

Among their concerns: creating more vocational opportunities for residents, building trust between the community and law enforcement and keeping young kids off city streets through a stronger desire for education.

Wegman and Seligman Outline Finger Lakes REDC's Priorities

Developing a more skilled workforce for jobs in advanced manufacturing, photonics and the building trade is one of the goals of the Finger Lakes Regional Economic Development Council.

The Vice-Chairs of the REDC discussed the $96.2 million recently awarded by the state during a luncheon hosted by the Rochester Downtown Development Council in downtown on Wednesday.

Elected Officials Raise Questions About the Cost of Fracking

City Councilwoman Loretta Scott, among other officials, raising concerns over fracking in New York.

As the New York Department of Environmental Conservation is expected to make a decision on the safety of hydraulic Fracturing, some local officials are speaking out in opposition.

Some Monroe County elected-officials are calling on the governor to continue the moratorium on fracking. That's until more comprehensive studies have been done. The group of leaders are part of more than 600 officials across the state called "Elected Officials to Protect New York".

State Grants for Local Dairy Farmers

Governor Cuomo's newly drawn grant programs are gaining the support of Assemblyman Steve Hawley, of the 139 Assembly District.

The programs provide dairy farmers with an opportunity to expand their operations  through the Dariy Acceleration Program that sets aside nearly half a million dollars to connect them with experts. The other is the Anaerobic Digester Biogas-to-Electricity initiative. It doubles the incentive amount available to farmers - who install the equipment - from $1 millionto $2 million, to turn their cow waste into electricity.

Local Gun Owners Ask Questions about NY SAFE Act

Dozens of Rochester area gun owners came to a forum at the Public Safety Building Tuesday night to ask questions and offer opinions on the New York SAFE Act, the tough new gun law passed two weeks ago. 

Representatives were on hand from the State Police and the State Division of Criminal Justice Services. Gun owners had questions about everything from gun permit renewals to ammunition background checks and and assault weapon registration.

Dawn Nguyen Appears in Federal Court

The Greece woman facing charges for illegally purchasing a few of the guns used in the deadly West Webster shooting appeared in federal court Tuesday.

The federal case against Dawn Nguyen has been pushed off until April 1st. That's to give her attorney, Matt Parinello, more time to gather all the material in the case before possibly moving it to a grand jury or taking a plea deal.

Equal Access on the Playing Field for Students with Disabilities

The federal Department of Education is requiring schools nationwide to give students with disabilities a fair chance at playing on traditional sports teams with their peers. The order is in response to a 2010 report by the Government Accountability Office, which found students with disabilities were playing extracurricular activities much less than students without disabilities.

The Chief Operating Officer of the Center for Disability Rights, Chris Hilderbrant says the order is long over due.
