Carlet earned her Associate’s degree in Communications & Media Arts from Monroe Community College in 2004, and received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Communications/Journalism at St. John Fisher College in 2006. Her work has been honored by the New York State chapter of the Associated Press.

Rochester Natives Describe Scene in Boston

Some Rochester natives described the massive manhunt for the Boston Marathon bombing suspect on Friday as a scene out of a movie.

"Where ... you hear helicopters above you, swarms and swarms of FBI agents and police squads with your machine guns out," says former Town of Pittsford resident, Justin Ross, who now lives just outside of the Watertown neighborhood in Boston.

"It has the feeling of a snow day. It's understood that you can't really go anywhere or do anything...it kind of has an eerie feeling to it."

Unemployment Benefits to Rise in 2014

Unemployment benefits are going up next year for those New Yorkers who are out of work. The minimum weekly benefit for those out of work will increase from 64-dollars to 100-dollars. And the maximum benefit will increase to 420 dollars from 405 dollars. Beth Cordello, of the law group Underberg and Kessler, says this is the first time unemployment benefits are indexed to, hopefully, keep up with inflation....

MC Honors Local Vietnam Veterans

Monroe County Legislator Richard Yolevich, of the 1st Legislative District, presents proclamation to the president of the Chapter 20 Vietnam Veterans of America, Valentino Gatto.

Local Vietnam Veterans are being recognized by Monroe County for their service in the nation's longest war.

During a ceremony at the Olmstead Lodge on Friday, county Executive Maggie Brooks declared March 29, 2013  Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans Day.

"You are truly our hometown hero in ways that we can't express," Brook says.

Vets were individually honored with a certificate from the county - as a token of their appreciation.

Distracted Drivers Could Pay Higher Penalties

If New York’s budget is approved by the Assembly, a ticket for distracted driving, including texting or talking without a hands-free device, would carry a minimum $50 fine.

The budget would raise the fees for distracted driving to $150 and $200 on the second offense within 18 months. Three or more infractions would result in a maximum penalty of $400 within 18 months.

Supreme Court Hearings on Gay Marriage

A pair of same-sex marriage cases are being heard for the first time before the U.S. Supreme Court this week.

One of the arguments in review is the Defense of Marriage Act, or DOMA. Under that law, states are not required to recognize gay marriages made in other states. And gay and lesbian spouses, who are validly married, are banned from collecting federal retirement which means couple's have to file separately on their federal tax forms, but can file jointly for their state income taxes.

Dawn Nguyen Pleads Not Guilty to Federal Charges

Twenty four year old Dawn Nguyen pleaded not guilty to charges that she knowingly bought guns for the shooter in the West Webster ambush on Christmas Eve.

Nguyen was arraigned in federal court on a three-count indictment on Monday. They include lying on a federal form, possessing firearms while using marijuana and providing a rifle and shotgun to convicted felon William Spengler Jr.

Outside the federal building, Nguyen's attorney Matthew Parinello says it's going to be hard for Nguyen to receive a fair trial in this community.

NY Office for New Americans Opens Center In Rochester

Rochester is part of a network of 27 communities across New York helping immigrants and refugees to contribute to the state's economy and become a part of the "family of New York".

Governor Cuomo launched the Office for New Americans Monday to help newcomers learn the English language, prep for the citizenship exam as well as harnessing their entrepreneurial spirit to start and grow businesses. According to the Governor's Office, 29% of small businesses in New York are owned by people born in other counties.
