Chase Corporate Challenge Draws Thousands

It was a near-record crowd and near-perfect weather for the annual J.P. Morgan Chase Corporate Challenge on Tuesday night in Rochester.

A total of 10,921 runners and walkers in teams representing 460 companies and other organizations competed in the three and a half mile race.

The weather started out muggy, but a cool breeze greeted the participants by race time at the RIT course, and then toward the end, thunderstorms drenched whoever wasn’t under the many tents set up at the campus.

Douglas Lowry Reappointed Eastman School Dean

Douglas Lowry has been reappointed as Dean of the Eastman School of Music. The announcement came Sunday from University of Rochester President Joel Seligman. Lowry was appointed to a second, five-year term.

Lowry joined the Eastman School in 2007. He led the completion of the biggest architectural transformation in the school’s history, which includes the renovation of Kodak Hall at Eastman Theatre and the building of the new Eastman East Wing.

Winning Powerball Ticket Sold In Florida

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Powerball officials were pretty confident there would be a winner in Saturday night's giant jackpot and they were right.

A single ticket sold in Florida has the winning number for the top prize an estimated $590.5 million. Ticket sales accounted for about 80 percent of all possible number combinations.

Officials say the winning ticket was sold at a Publix supermarket in Zephyrhills, Fla. Florida lottery officials say more details will be released later.

Remmereit To Lead Chamber Orchestra

A local conductor involved in a recent controversy has a new job.

The Rochester Chamber Orchestra has named Arild Remmereit as their artistic director. Remmereit previously was music director for the RPO. He had been a guest conductor for the chamber orchestra in February, and he will take the new job on a regular basis in the next season.

David Fetler has been the music director and conductor for the chamber orchestra for 50 years and he will step down from those positions in the 2014-2015 season, which will allow Remmereit to take over those tasks.

Cold Weather Isn't Bothering the Lilacs

Rochester's Lilacs are going to be in good condition throughout the festival, according to Monroe County Parks Superintendent of Horticulture, Mark Quinn.
He says they were at peak bloom at the start of the festival, and tonight's predicted freeze won't damage the lilacs.
He says the cold weather actually holds the bloom for a longer period of time.
Quinn says he doesn't remember seeing a bloom that looks any better than this one.
The Rochester Lilac Festival runs through Sunday.

Visitors to Highland Park for day one of the Rochester Lilac Festival were greeted by rain -- heavy rain at times.
But regular visitors to the festival are accustomed to some iffy weather now and then.
Even Lilac -- and that's her name -- a Rochester resident who never misses this event, says it could be raining, snowing, or 85 degrees during the festival -- you never know.
Hundreds of thousands of visitors are expected during the festivals day-run through May 19th.
