Modest Hiring In April Jobs Numbers

New numbers from the New York State Labor Department show some modest job growth in the Rochester area in April. There was a gain of 1700 private sector jobs compared to April of last year. State Labor Analyst Tammy Marino says some of those gains came from the private education and health care sectors.

She also says seasonal hiring was stronger than it usually is for April. Marino says the employment level for the Rochester Metro in April was the highest it has been for that month since 2008.

Most School Budgets Expected to Pass

Voters in New York go to the polls on May 21st  to approve new school budgets. The State School Boards Association finds that many school districts are living within the limits imposed by a property tax cap enacted two years ago.

The School Board Association’s Tim Kremer says a survey of the state’s school districts finds that the vast majority are budgeting within the strictures of the tax cap, and as a result,  93% expect their budgets to be approved by voters.

Cuomo Says Lopez Should be Expelled, Stops Short of Criticizing Speaker Silver

Governor Cuomo is calling on Assemblyman Vito Lopez, the subject of a scathing ethics commission report on sexual harassment, to resign from office or be expelled.

Cuomo, calling Lopez’s sexual harassment of at least four women, as portrayed in the state ethics report, “disturbing” and “ugly” and he says the Assemblyman should immediately resign, or the rest of the Assembly should move to get rid of him.

“The reaction from the legislature should be zero tolerance,” Cuomo said. “If he doesn’t resign, he should be expelled.”

Planned Parenthood Organizations Merging

Planned Parenthood of the Rochester/Syracuse Region and Planned Parenthood of Western New York are merging, and the outgoing CEO of the local agency says it will be a stronger organization as a result.
Jim Stewart says this puts together the strengths of two very effective organizations in a single entity that is strengthened for the future.
He says between the two organizations, they serve about 36-thousand patients, 50 thousand education clients, and locally about 14-hundred survivors of sexual assault.

New Warner School Building Dedicated

Dedication ceremonies were planned Thursday for LeChase Hall, the new home of the Warner School of Education at the University of Rochester.
Warner School Dean Rafaella Borasi says the school was established in 1958, and this is the first building dedicated exclusively for that school.
She says this puts all of the Warner School under the roof, and helps establish the identity and importance of the school of education on campus.

  Abdominal aortic aneurysms are one of the top ten causes of death in men over the age of 55, and upstate New York has higher rates of this condition than the rest of the country.

Researchers are now working on patient-specific diagnosis and treatment for the condition.

Governor Unveils Innovation Hot Spots Competition

Governor Cuomo kicked off round 3 of the competition among the state's Regional Economic Development Councils on Wednesday. 

The 10  councils will be competing for $222 million in state funds.  The Finger Lakes Regional council was the winner of the best plan award in round two last year. 

Council co-chair Sandy Parker says more than 250 regional stakeholders make up the council's 14 work groups and they are working toward a goal of creating 40,000 new jobs in the region by the end of 2016.
